Appalachian helped me to see and deal with problems in my life I could not solve by myself. As well as being qualified/professionals, I found their counseling to be very "human" which helped me to understand and accept professional guidance that perhaps I might otherwise have resisted. I highly recommend this team - they are incredible.
Venues for Therapy
In-Person
We are excited to offer our clients a new renovated space in the heart of Fairmont, West Virginia. Our new space is conveniently located at 207 Fairmont Avenue right off the downtown exit. You will be able to meet with your therapist one on one in a private office or with your peer group in one of the group rooms. It's common to grab a cup of coffee or water bottle and then sit down to work out the messy things face to face in a safe, comfortable environment.
Teletherapy
Teletherapy sessions work much like the in-person variety. You make an appointment in advance with your therapist, but instead of traveling to an office, you hop on your computer (or mobile device) and receive a HIPAA-secure link to your email to gain access to our video chat. To access the Client Portal Instructions, click HERE. You can be anywhere to receive teletherapy — at home, at the office during lunch, and regardless of the weather or the lack of transportation options. This option can be very helpful to people who live in rural areas, far from mental health professionals.

Teletherapy provides you with benefits that may lead to better care. We understand it can be difficult to take time off from your busy schedule to come to our office. This form of treatment can eliminate your commute time and lead to less stress, especially when you are scheduled to see your therapist often. For clients who are usually seen in the office but are sick or traveling, this form of treatment allows you to still keep your appointment without interrupting your care.
Walk & Talk Therapy
Walk & Talk Therapy sessions are just like office sessions, except that we are outside enjoying the outdoors and the benefits of physical movement. There is extensive research extolling the benefits of physical movement, not just for your physical health but also for your brain and mental health. Different parts of the brain are accessed while walking, so it can help clients who have felt stuck with traditional therapy find new ways to think about their lives. You can read more about the benefits of walk and talk therapy here.

Many clients find it easier to talk and reflect on their life while walking, or it's simply more enjoyable than sitting in the office. So, instead of just sitting and talking about change, let's move forward - literally!

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice for a number of issues including depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and eating disorders. It involves changing the thoughts and behaviors that are interfering with everyday functioning, and can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatment modalities. We also offer CBT-I which is CBNT for insomnia. Together, we will educate and gain insight into your unique sleep patterns and then shift and adjust to increase your overall wellbeing.
DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY
DBT is a recently developed and well researched treatment that addresses dysregulation, or a lack of balance. Philosophically, DBT integrates eastern ideals like meditation and mindfulness with western evidenced based therapeutic techniques. DBT is a highly structured treatment that focuses on building skills to help you have better relationships, deal with strong emotions more effectively, tolerate life’s inevitable suffering more gracefully, and find balance. The focus in DBT is to live a life worth living.
EMDR
EMDR is a holistic and form of therapy designed to diminish negative feelings associated with memories and traumatic events. The goal of EMDR is to fully process past experiences and sort out the emotions attached to those experiences. Negative thoughts and feelings that are no longer useful are replaced with positive thoughts and feelings that will encourage healthier behavior and social interactions. Ultimately, it teaches self efficacy as you teach your brain how to regulate itself. Though it was originally developed for PTSD, we find this intervention effective in treating a wide range of mental health symptoms including: anxiety, depression, chronic pain and grief and loss. We often use this intervention to help you realize your ideal self and create tools to help you you along the journey.
Hypnotherapy
In a hypnotherapy session we journey to all the subconscious roots that are causing whatever issue you are having. This journey may begin in the womb, in childhood, or it could take us to past life time's that have trauma that needs resolved. Where ever this journey takes us you will learn more about yourself and you will begin to heal yourself on the deepest of levels. When you work though the roots and bring any protective parts forward to now. You can begin to notice that not only are the issues gone, but you have the peace of mind of knowing it will never return.
Motivational Interviewing
When we know we should change something (eating, shopping, substances, smoking etc) but we don’t really want to… or maybe we do want to…. motivational interviewing is a highly effective treatment. The focus is on understanding, and respecting, ambivalence. Ambivalence is normal, and change is hard. We partner together to see if you’re ready to try something different.
PSYCHOANALYTICALLY ORIENTED PSYCHOTHERAPY
Often our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are motivated by factors that we are not fully conscious of. For example, how we understood our parents’ marriage in childhood might influence how we act in our present relationships. By honoring the fact that we are complicated, that we have histories, that we have a rich inner life, we are able to address patterns that repeat. We are not “blank slate” therapists. Instead, we will use the information we gain in our therapy relationship to shed more light on what makes you tick. Working from a psychodynamic perspective enables us to make deep change, to alter long standing patterns allowing you to feel relief and a bit freer. It’s a creative, alive, interactive process
