Approach

I utilize an integrative approach that combines medication management with evidence based therapeutic interventions, mindfulness, lifestyle modification, and patient education. I believe in treating the whole person, "mind, body, and spirit" while considering each individual’s unique life experiences and cultural background. My practice emphasizes collaboration, self-empowerment, and preventive mental health care to foster long-term stability and wellness.

I believe that my patients are the experts on their own lives. They know best what works for them, what doesn’t, and what truly matters to them. I work together with patients and their families to create care that fits who they are, their values, their circumstances, and their current stage of life.

About

Wife ·  Mom, Wanna Be World Traveler ·  Skier · Yogi · Kindergarten Level Crafter ·  Concert Lover · True Crime & Fiction Novel Enthusiast ·  Pizza Lover

I was born in Hawaii, raised in upstate New York, and moved to Bridgeport, West Virginia, at age twelve when my dad began flying as a commercial airline pilot. Maybe that’s where my love for movement and adventure began . I’ve always felt meant to explore. In 2005, I started travel nursing and spent years working in ICUs across the country, from Charleston, South Carolina, to Washington, D.C., to the wild beauty of Alaska. It was in Alaska that I discovered my love of the outdoors,  hiking, camping, and soaking in the quiet peace of nature. To this day, Canaan Valley remains my happy place, where I instantly feel grounded and calm.

Throughout my nursing journey, what always stood out to me wasn’t just the medical care, it was the human connection. I realized that being a good listener and emotional support was just as vital as stabilizing someone’s physical health. That realization led me to pursue my lifelong dream of working in mental health. For the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of helping individuals navigate their mental wellness as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, and I truly feel I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

My greatest teachers in life are my husband of 14 years, and our three loud and full of personality kiddo’s.  Raising three kids makes life chaotic, unpredictable, and hard, in all the (mostly) good and meaningful ways.

Professional Background

Michelle Martin earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia University in 2004 and began her career as an ICU travel nurse, serving in Tennessee, Washington DC, Baltimore, Hilton Head, Charleston (SC), and Anchorage, Alaska. Her years in the ICU gave her broad clinical experience in medical-surgical, cardiovascular, neuro, and digestive care, as well as the privilege of caring for patients from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The stories she witnessed throughout her travels shaped her just as powerfully as her clinical training.

In 2010, Michelle returned home to West Virginia and spent eight years at United Hospital Center as an ICU/Dialysis RN. During that time, she began volunteering as an addiction recovery coach and became deeply involved in local recovery efforts. This work strengthened her passion for psychiatric and mental health care.

Michelle completed her Family Nurse Practitioner degree at Wheeling University in 2022 and immediately transitioned into outpatient psychiatry, providing psychiatric medication management and interventional services, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Spravato therapy. After years in hospital settings, she finds it profoundly meaningful to walk with patients as they grow, heal, and reclaim their lives. These experiences continue to affirm her commitment to this field.

She is currently enrolled in the post-master’s certification program at West Virginia University to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
